Brief Biography Gilbert M. Gutierrez – Chan Master
Gilbert Gutierrez is a lay Chan master in the Chinese tradition.
His parents were Mexico descents. He grew up and was raised as a Catholic in the United States. Gilbert obtained a BA and also a law degree at UCLA. In 1974, he was admitted to the California Bar. He has practiced law for over thirty years in Riverside California.
Growing up Catholic, Gilbert felt a strong tie with the Virgin Mary and the concept of universal compassion for all beings. But he also had religious doubts and felt a longing for a great truth which he knew existed but hadn’t found. His religious search took him to many corners, and he also practiced marital arts for years.
Being drawn to the meditative dimension of martial arts, Gilbert began studying with many Chi Gong masters. Gilbert felt the need to find out the purpose and meaning of the practice. Yet his deeper questions had not been answered by those mastsers.
Gilbert began a formal training in Buddhism under a Buddhist Chi Gong Master. By chance, Gilbert read the Diamond Sutra. And, he had a profound experience.
Later Gilbert met and undertook years of training as a disciple of the Great Chan Master Venerable Sheng-Yen. After devoted effort, he became one of five lay-person Dharma heirs. Gilbert is the only American to receive transmission by Master Sheng-Yen as a Chan Buddhist master.
Today Gilbert teaches Dharma and practices law in Riverside California. He also travels across the country to teach Buddha Dharma.
Gilbert’s web page from The Riverside Chan Meditation Group is

Loving-Kindness Meditation Retreat with Venerable Kai-Zhao at LBA's Amitabha Village Retreat Center on July 13th and 14th
Location: Amitabha Village Retreat Center (14796 Beardslee Rd. Perry, Michigan 48872)
Time: 10 a.m., July 13 (Saturday) to 4 p.m., July 14 (Sunday)
Please click here to register online
(Note: This retreat will be conducted bilingually, with Ven. Kai-Zhao speaking in Chinese and oral interpretation in English being offered on-site.)
Venerable Kao-Zhao was ordained in Penang, Malaysia in 1987. Since then, he has frequently visited prisons to bring the Buddhadharma to inmates and therefore has been lauded as "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in the human world."
In this Loving-Kindness Meditation Retreat, participants will learn how to treat oneself and others with loving-kindness and a mind that is soft and at ease. Both beginners and experienced practitioners can benefit from this practice with a clear sequence of progression.
According to Māhaprajñāparamitopadeśa (Treatise on the Larger Sutra on Transcendent Wisdom), a practitioner who wishes to cultivate the Immeasurable of Loving-Kindness should first make a vow: "May all beings be happy." Then one takes the imagery of someone being happy and gathers one's mind to meditate on it. The imagery will gradually be broadened to all beings. It is like making a fire: one starts with things that can be easily lit, such as hay and dried cow dung, and when the fire is sufficiently fueled, it can burn even big wet logs. Metta samadhi is reached in the same way: one starts with generating loving-kindness for one's family, relatives, and good friends, and eventually one's loving-kindness will grow to the point that one wishes happiness for even one's enemies.
t is rare to hear the Buddhadharma, and it is rare to encounter good spiritual teachers. Please seize this opportunity and partake in the Dharma joy with your family and friends.

Brief Biography
Gilbert M. Gutierrez – Chan Master
Gilbert Gutierrez is a lay Chan master in the Chinese tradition.
His parents were from Mexico, and he grew up and was raised a Catholic
in the United States. Gilbert obtained a BA and also a law degree at UCLA.
In 1974 he was admitted to the California bar and has practiced law for
over thirty years in Riverside California.
Growing up Catholic Gilbert felt a strong tie with the Virgin Mary and the concept of universal compassion for all beings. But he also had religious doubts and felt a longing for a great truth which he knew existed but hadn’t found. His religious search took him to many corners, and he also practiced for years in the marital arts.
Being drawn to the meditative dimension of the martial arts, Gilbert began studying Chi Gong with different masters. He was invited to become a Chi Gong master himself but declined feeling his deeper questions had not been answered.
Gilbert began formal training in Buddhism under a Buddhist Chi Gong Master. Chance events led him to read the Diamond Sutra, and he had a profound
experience of illumination.
Later Gilbert met and undertook years of training as a disciple of the Great Chan Master Venerable Sheng-yen. After devoted effort, he became one of five lay persons and the only American to receive transmission as a Master Sheng-yen’s dharma heir as a Chan Buddhist master.
Today Gilbert teaches dharma and practices law in Riverside California.
He is married to Ai-Lun Wei, also a discipline of Master Sheng-yen, and has a
son, Ananda who may accompany his father around the country
when Gilbert teaches.
Gilbert’s web page from The Riverside Chan Meditation Group is http://www.riversidechan.org/. His dharma talks can be downloaded at http://dharmatalks.riversidechan.org.
