Brief Biography Gilbert M. Gutierrez – Chan Master
Gilbert Gutierrez is a lay Chan master in the Chinese tradition.
His parents were Mexico descents. He grew up and was raised as a Catholic in the United States. Gilbert obtained a BA and also a law degree at UCLA. In 1974, he was admitted to the California Bar. He has practiced law for over thirty years in Riverside California.
Growing up Catholic, Gilbert felt a strong tie with the Virgin Mary and the concept of universal compassion for all beings. But he also had religious doubts and felt a longing for a great truth which he knew existed but hadn’t found. His religious search took him to many corners, and he also practiced marital arts for years.
Being drawn to the meditative dimension of martial arts, Gilbert began studying with many Chi Gong masters. Gilbert felt the need to find out the purpose and meaning of the practice. Yet his deeper questions had not been answered by those mastsers.
Gilbert began a formal training in Buddhism under a Buddhist Chi Gong Master. By chance, Gilbert read the Diamond Sutra. And, he had a profound experience.
Later Gilbert met and undertook years of training as a disciple of the Great Chan Master Venerable Sheng-Yen. After devoted effort, he became one of five lay-person Dharma heirs. Gilbert is the only American to receive transmission by Master Sheng-Yen as a Chan Buddhist master.
Today Gilbert teaches Dharma and practices law in Riverside California. He also travels across the country to teach Buddha Dharma.
Gilbert’s web page from The Riverside Chan Meditation Group is
http://www.riversidechan.org/. His Dharma talks can be downloaded at http://dharmatalks.riversidechan.org.

“The Power of Mind”: Mind is a powerful element that affects our whole being as well as all beings and the planet. However, this power is largely unknown and unexplored. This talk will reveal how a wholesome mind can overcome obstacles that arise, while an unwholesome mind hastens the ripening of unwholesome karma.
“How to Develop Concentration and Insight”: On this retreat Sayalay will start by helping students develop a basis in concentration, teaching the fundamental practice of Mindfulness of Breathing (Anapanasati), which is the method practiced by the Buddha on the night of his enlightenment. The Buddha praised concentration: “One with concentration sees things as they really are.”
Armed with concentration, students will then be taught the second vehicle to liberation—Insight meditation: Sayalay shares the distinctive teaching on Contemplation of Mind, a profound way to train ourselves to be mindful of our own mind, gradually liberating it from identity view and grasping and thus developing freedom of the mind.
Sayalay Susila
Born and educated in Malaysia, Sayalay Susila ordained as a Theravada Buddhist nun in 1991 at the age of 28, and has trained with two renowned Burmese meditation masters – the Venerable Sayadaw U Pandita and the Venerable Pa-Auk Sayadaw, under whose guidance she continues to practice today.
Sayalay is well known especially for the clarity of her teaching of the Theravada Buddhist Suttas and Abhidhamma, which she taught initially in Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore, as well as in Buddhist centers across Canada, the United States, and Australia.
Sister has several books in print, including the well regarded “Unravelling the Mysteries of Mind and Body Through Abhidhamma.” She speaks fluent English, Mandarin Chinese, and Burmese, and has translated widely from English to Chinese for Venerable Pa-Auk Sayadaw in Malaysia and Taiwan. Sayalay is the abbot of Appamada Vihari, an international meditation center in Penang, Malaysia. Her books, talks, and retreat schedule are online at www.sayalaysusila.net.
The Lansing Buddhist Association is honored to welcome this distinguished Buddhist nun to Michigan.
